About Vincent Lim
Hello, thank you for looking at my blog! Now, a little about myself. I am currently studying Industrial Design and Product Development at San Francisco State University. It was a long a fulfilling journey getting to where I am today. Starting from the past, My childhood was fairly normal, elementary to high School. After high school at 18 years old, I made the decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. I learned a lot being in the Marines, and it help me define myself moving forward in my young adult life. Fast forward my military career, when I got out of the Marines I decided to pursue my education by enrolling at my local community college, from there I transferred to San Francisco State.
I decided to enroll in Industrial Design because I always had a fascination about how things are made. what constitute a products features to be aesthetically pleasing? form versus functions. Why do we need designer for? A quote from Ralph Caplin inspired me.
“A chair is the first thing you need when you don’t really need anything, and is therefore a peculiarly compelling symbol of civilization. For it is civilization, not survival, that requires design.”
―
Simply put, we design aesthetically pleasing products because as a civilization we want to enjoy the things around us. be it a coffee maker, desk or lamp, how things fit in our space in relation to each other, makes life more enjoyable.
A lot the influence that made me the adult I am todays was my career in the Marines. that journey taught me to take charge of myself and gave me structure. translating that into design is not so simple. In the military whatever tool or way gets the job done can be crudely designed, to say it doesn't need to be pretty to work. In retrospect, I want the products I design to carry certain aspects, it has to be functional, simple and most importantly effective, while keeping aesthetics and ergonomics in the forefront.
My vision for the future is to create simple products that are not complicated, they are effective in what they do and are designed and engineered in mind of the impact they create on the environment and society.
3 Problem and purpose statements:
1.Keeping it cool, no Air conditioner (1 Health/Environment/safety)
3 Problem and purpose statements:
1.Keeping it cool, no Air conditioner (1 Health/Environment/safety)
Problem: over dependent on freon compressor based air-conditioning recycles stale air in the home and drives up the consumption of electricity which cost the household more money.
Purpose: To develop an effective window mounted solution which is easy to use and
can be programed to the time of day when cooling is needed.
2.Easy living space deployment (personal/society)
Problem: local governments create problematic permits processes in order to add living space (additional detached units) on an existing property.
Purpose: To design and develop a easily deployable yurt that compiles with local
governments laws
3. Improving parking lot safety (society/safety/Community)
Problem: Hayward parking lots have higher chances of vehicle vandalism during the
night.
Purpose: develop a surveillance system to deter vandalism and increase public safety.
Six words that describe me:
initiative, collaborative, resourceful, determined, perceptive, tactful
Hey Vincent, I really enjoyed reading your bio and getting to read about your past experiences. I love your vision for the future where products can be designed simple and get the job done, all well thinking about there environmental and social impact. Thank you for your service as well!
ReplyDeleteHi, Vincent, your Marine Corps experience surprised me, and I'm so glad that you got inspiration for design from it. I agree with you that design does not need to be ingenious but meet the user needs. Hope we'll have the opportunity to collaborate this summer.
ReplyDeleteHello Vincent, I like how you think about design in terms of functionality, simplicity, and effectiveness; as well as the impact you hope to create with your products. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with this summer.
ReplyDeleteHello Vincent, Welcome to DES 505 Senior Design Project. Looking forward to the successful development of your designated creative research project. Please update your BLOG with your Critique Review of the Past 505 Project Reports - Thanks!

Hey Vincent! I swear we've been in some classes together but I cannot remember at all...do you? Well, even if we didn't I can already tell you're going to be another entertaining classmate full of determination and creativity. When you rushed out to get answers and more resources for the next assignment, I felt a little inspired to get work going too! You're like an automatic rally call. Well, we are industrial designers and that means things don't build themselves so let's get to it!
